Exciting Courses for Spring 2008

The Geography Department offers several classes each semester of interest to both Geography majors and students from other disciplines seeking to supplement their degree program

GEOG442: BIOGEOGRAPHY (3cr)
A study of the patterns, processes and possible future of the distributions of living organisms. Climate, and human activities are major factors in the spatial distribution of flora and fauna locally and throughout the world, affecting biodiversity, extinction, and sustainability of ecosystems. Understanding how these factors interact within the biosphere is a key topic of current public concern.

GEOG642: ECOSYSTEM PROCESSES AND HUMAN HABITABILITY (3cr)
Biological and physical processes and their interactions determine human habitability. The extent to which humanity can exploit the Earth and keep up with changes is an urgent question. This class explores the biological processes that affect the capability of the Earth’s biota to support the demands of its human populations. The fundamental biological processes that are relevant are presented in order to understand the interactions between the physical, biological and human components of the biosphere.
