Graduate Orientation 2007

 

August 23, 24, and 27

 

   The dates for this year's Graduate Orientation are set for August 23, 24, and 27. Graduate Orientation is a departmentally sponsored event designed to introduce new graduates to departmental life. Attendance is mandatory. Orientation will permit new students to

  • meet the faculty,
  • register for Fall classes,
  • acquire a UM student ID,
  • pick up a pre-purchased campus parking permit, if needed,
  • access departmental and university facilities,
  • learn about administrative requirements and procedures
  • and interact with new students, faculty members, and current graduate students at scheduled events

          
Campus Orientation for Teaching Assistants

         
      Please note that new teaching assistants (TAs) and all new PhD students regardless of any assignment will be required to attend a campus-wide TA orientation on Monday, August 27th.

          
International Students

 

     International students are required to attend a campus wide orientation starting Monday, August 21st. Consult the schedule at International Education Services website.

Departmental Welcome

   This event is scheduled to allow all new graduate students a chance to get acquainted with each other prior to the onslaught of Orientation activities. Refreshments will be provided. It is recommended that you bring a writing instrument and a folder for photocopied materials.

 

Meet the Faculty
    The faculty will be introduced.  This event is an opportunity for new graduate students to learn about the various departmental research projects and research interests. Time will be set aside to introduce yourselves and relate your academic interests and research pursuits while in the department’s graduate program.

 

Departmental Welcome Luncheon
    This event brings all Geography faculty, staff, and current grad students to the seminar room for a lunch buffet, courtesy of the department.  At this time, new students are encouraged to mingle and meet new people. Vegetarian fare will be available.

 

University and Departmental Regulations
    It is important to know your university rights and responsibilities.  Dr. Cirrincione will discuss university and departmental regulations on a variety of topics including sexual harassment and substance abuse.

 

Academic Integrity
    A representative from the Office Student Conduct will make a presentation on the university's honor pledge, plagiarism, and other issues of academic integrity.

 

Meet with Advisers/photos

    Reserve this time to meet with your adviser. If you wish to contact your adviser prior to the orientation, Bob Crossgrove (crossgro@umd.edu) will provide you with the contact information.

    Bob Crossgrove will also make arrangements to take your photo for the web site during this time.

 

Campus Tour
    This event is scheduled to introduce new students to the UM campus.  Graduate students will show you the campus recreation center, libraries, and the student union. Additionally, they will take you to obtain student ID cards, pick up pre-purchased parking permits, and sign up for a campus student computer account.

 

Happy Hour
    This event is not mandatory.  It is an opportunity for new graduate students to get the low-down on classes and departmental activities from current graduate students. We will meet in LeFrak 1124 and leave together.

TA, RA Administrative Review
    TAs/RAs who have not already seen Liz Smith to review and fill out paperwork regarding benefits, tuition remission, payroll, etc., should do so at this time. At this time, departmental keys will be distributed.

 

Coffee Hour
    Coffee hour is a weekly occurrence in the department. Learn to make it a habit by joining current graduate students for an informal gathering in the grad lounge. Light breakfast snacks will be provided.

 

Academic Requirements
  Dr. Ralph Dubayah, Graduate Program Director, along with various faculty members will present new students with up-to-date information regarding the requirements for advanced departmental degrees.  You will learn about the mandatory course requirements.

 

Departmental Administrative Orientation
    Bob Crossgrove and Vivre Bell will introduce new graduates to the fabulous front office personnel that make the department run so smoothly.  They will provide information about resources available through the department front office, grad office, and on the department's intranet on our website.

 

Lunch and Graduate Student Organization Meeting
    Join current grads for lunch and meeting of the Geography Department's GSO. We will elect new leaders and committee representatives., new students are encouraged to mingle and meet new people. Vegetarian fare will be available.

 

Departmental Facilities
    Join us for a tour of the department and learn how to access our facilities. You will be introduced to our PC computer labs and shown how to use your glue account. You will be shown the graduate student computer lab and how to gain access to it. We will demonstrate and explain card access to LeFrak. You will be shown where the lockers are and how you can claim one. We will also give a brief tour of the many labs in which some of you will be working. We will also show TAs where they can find teaching resources, hold office hours, etc.

 

Free Time

    You will have free time to explore the campus, register for classes, purchase books, look for housing, etc.

 

Departmental Social
    Dr. Townshend will sponsor a social get together at at nearby location starting at 5pm. Directions will be provided during orientation. It will be another opportunity to become familiar with other graduate students (current and new) and faculty and staff.

Campus Orientation for Teaching Assistants and New PhD Students

    Introductions will begin at 8:00am to allow all new Geography TAs and all non-TA PhD students to get a chance to meet each other prior to the Campus Orientation, which begins at 8:30am.

    This event is sponsored by the University and is mandatory for all new teaching assistants. In the morning, all new attendees receive TA handbooks which provide them with helpful information as well as university policies. The morning programs consist of an overview of good teaching, campus policies and an opportunity to ask questions of experienced TAs. There are a variety of workshops in the afternoon. Each attendee may pick the two that are of interest to him/her. You may consult the schedule at http://www.cte.umd.edu/ and register.

    Lunch will be provided.

    NOTE: Non-TA MAs will have the day off.
