Geography and Secondary Education Double Major

Geography and Secondary Education Double Major

Students can double-major in Geography and Secondary Education for a certification in Geography Education.  This requires that students seek advising in both the Geography Department and the College of Education Department of Curriculum Instruction (EDCI).  In order to pursue this double-major, you must eventually gain admission into the College of Education.  Requirements for admission to the EDCI department can be found at http://www.education.umd.edu/EDCI/info/admit.html and additional information and course lists for the Geography Education certification can be found at http://www.education.umd.edu/EDCI/info/geog.html.

In addition to the secondary education and university core requirements, students are required to take the following Geography courses for this double-major program:

GEOG 201 Geography of Environmental Systems (3)
GEOG 211 Geography of Environmental Systems Lab (1)
GEOG 202 The World in Cultural Perspective (3)
GEOG 212 The World in Cultural Perspective Lab (1)

1 300-level physical geography course (3)
1 300-level human geography course (3)
1 300-level technique geography course (3)

1 quantitative course

5 upper-level systematic geography electives (15 credits)

The following courses are also required for the pre-professional requirements.  Fifteen of these credits will also apply to your supporting area requirement for the Geography major.

GVPT 170 (3 credits)
GVPT 100, 260, or 280 (3)
HIST 156 or 157 (3)
1 100- or 200-level non-US/non-Western HIST (3)
