Majoring in Geography

The Geography Department currently supports two specializations in Geography:

1) Geography

2) Geographic Information Science and Computer Cartography.

Students specializing in Geography will be exposed to a diversity of coursework that will focus on human-environmental interactions, and will also develop an area of concentration in Geography, such as urban geography or biogeography. The Geographic Information Systems and Computer Cartography specialization emphasizes the applications of geographic technology, such as remote sensing. Follow the links below for complete descriptions and requirements:

·  Geography

·  Geographic Information Science

If you are interested in both specializations, you can complete both sets of curriculums. If your primary specialization is Geography, you will earn a Bachelor of Science in Geography with a specialization in Geography. In completing the curriculum for the GIS and Computer Cartography specialization, you will also earn the GIS Minor and a departmental certificate that will enumerate your additional coursework. If your primary specialization is GIS and Computer Cartography, you will earn a Bachelor of Science in Geography with a specialization in GIS and Computer Cartography. In addition, you will be awarded a departmental certificate enumerating the additional coursework in Geography. See the advisors in the Geography Advising Office for more information.

The Geography Department is also part of the Environmental Science and Policy (ENSP) program, a new multidisciplinary degree on the University of Maryland campus, and sponsors three areas of concentration:

·  Land Use
