Global Rain Forest Mapping Project (GRFM)

nasalogo

The GRFM project is part of the JERS 1 Application Programmes at NASDA EORC. The objective of this project is the acquisition of a contiguous coverage of JERS 1 SAR data for every remaining forested area on Earth. Under this project, Central Africa was covered twice in 1996 : during the dry season (between January and March) and during the peak of flood (October-November).

The Joint Research Center (JRC) of Ispra (European Community) and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) of Pasadena (NASA) cooperate with NASDA for the post-processing and the data set generation. The ouputs of the project are SAR image mosaics (100m and 500 m resolution, digital and photographic) and full resolution scenes (12.5m). Scientists from around the world will performe projects at the local, regional and global level, using these outputs. L-band SAR reveals interesting information about flooded environments and forest biomass which is not obtainable by any optical sensor nor by C-band SAR.
