The NASA Goddard Space Flight Center , the Geography Department
of the University of Maryland and the Department of Environmental Sciences
of the University of Virginia are participating in the Central Africa Regional
Program for the Environment (CARPE) of USAID. The CARPE program is a multi-partner
program with the goal to address the issue of environmental management
in the Congo Basin. Fig.

The NASA / UMd / UVa component of CARPE is, in collaboration
with the other partners, a regional initiative, focused around improved
monitoring of the forest resources of the region, and leading towards a
better understanding of the state of the forests, the extent and the location
of forest degradation and the development of a regional forest management
plan.
Under CARPE, NASA/UMd/UVa will work on the following topics
:
- coordination of satellite data acquisitions within CARPE
and facilitating the provision and exchange of high resolution satellite
data needed by the CARPE partners. This activity will be closely linked
to the NASA LANDSAT PATHFINDER project,
being undertaken for Central Africa, at UMd.
- contributing to the CARPE regional
GIS data base in order to improve the CARPE planning and to facilitate
the future integration of the local case study results at the regional
level. The GIS will primarily support land use change modelling within
the region. This activity will be couched within the Framework #1 activity
on data and information management.
- coordination of the various Remote
Sensing and GIS projects within CARPE and within the region. Emphasis
will be given to international collaboration, particularly involving African
nationals in this aspect of the CARPE program.
