Some preliminary thoughts

• Geography can NOT be defined as simply what geographers do.

  • I am a geographer, but I carry out all manner of activities at times, that are not especially geographical.

• The fact that we overlap with other disciplinary areas is irrelevant

  • all disciplines do this.

• Many of the traditional boundaries are breaking down

  • It is becoming at least as important what we can contribute in solving new inter-disciplinary problems as what we do within our own subjects.

• We still should ask what is distinctive about the geographical approach.
