Welcome to the 8 km Global Land Cover Classification website. This
site is designed to provide a global land cover classification at 8km
spatial resolution. Details of the methodology have been accepted for
publication in the International Journal of Remote Sensing.
- DeFries, R.S., Hansen, M., Townshend, J.R.G., and Sohlberg, R.,
1998,
Global land cover classifications at 8km spatial resolution: the use of
training data derived from Landsat imagery in decision tree classifiers,
International Journal of Remote Sensing, 19(16), 3141-3168.
Many others have been
acknowledged in assisting the completion of the project. Funding was
received from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration.
This site will guide you through the two main steps we used to derive
the classification. The first section of the site will describe the
derivation of a global network of training sites from Landsat imagery, and
the second section will discuss the testing of a number of metrics that
describe the temporal dynamics of vegetation over an annual cycle.
