The Department of Geography celebrated its first GIS day on November 13th, 2007 with a Geographic Information Systems Panel and Discussion Program. Organized by alumnus Marlise Wilson, the panel featured alumni Michael Ratcliffe, representing the U.S. Census Bureau, and Riva San Juan, representing INDUS Corporation, in addition to guest speakers from the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the U.S. Navy. Michael, who works as a manager for the U.S. Census Bureau, discussed the importance of GIS in his work and described the census as “essentially a geographic enterprise.” Riva, who works as a GIS specialist for INDUS Corporation, described the variety of ways in which she uses her GIS expertise to support the GIS needs of the EPA Office of Water. Marlise is employed with the Artic-Slope Regional Corporation (ASRC) Management Services and is contracting with the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
