Dr. Ivan Csiszar has received an award for over $450,000 for the "Analysis of Long-Term Fire Dynamics and Impacts in the Amazon Using Integrated Multi-Source Fire Observations."
The research will create a standardized fire data record for the Amazon derived from multiple satellite sensors and the application of the resulting data set for the quantification of fire impacts in the region.
The project will involve an extensive data inter-comparison analysis to study the relationships between different satellite fire products. The extended and improved fire data products will be used to produce enhanced fire spatial and temporal distribution maps which, in combination with other parameters (e.g., deforestation data), will be used to explain land management practices and their consequences to the environment. Emission modeling studies are planned for the final phase of the project by feeding models with the results produced in the project activities.
Team members are Wilfrid Schroeder of the Department of Geography, Dr. Elaine Prins and Dr. Christopher Schmidt of the University of Wisconsin, Dr. Karla Longo (Co-PI), Dr. Alberto W. Setzer and Dr. Saulo Freitas all of INPE in Brazil and Dr. Jeffrey Morisette, NASA.
