The University of Maryland (College Park) Department of Geography invites applications for a tenured Full Professor in human geography. This position is expected to start on or about August 2007. Salary and benefits are highly competitive, commensurate with qualifications and experience. A Ph.D. degree in geography or in a related area of the social sciences is required. We are seeking an outstanding candidate who will provide leadership in developing our research and teaching in human geography. We anticipate that, following this full professor appointment, further appointments in human geography, at a more junior level, will be pursued. To achieve these goals, the successful candidate is expected to take advantage of existing strengths of the department, realizing synergies between human and physical geography. The UMD Geography Department is achieving substantial success in integrated studies of the Earth system as well as the development and application of remote sensing and geographic information systems to local, regional, and global issues in geography. We are seeking applicants who offer strong potential to further enhance the Department's national and international reputation. Applicants must demonstrate substantive research, teaching, and service experience, as well as an established publication record. The successful applicant is also expected to substantively contribute to development of the teaching program of the department. Applications should include a vision for strengthening human geography in the department as well as a personal statement of background and experience relevant to the position, including research, teaching and service activities, a signed, dated Curriculum Vitae, reprints of selected peer-reviewed publications, and names and addresses (including e-mail) of 3-5 referees.
