2005 Commencement
For the third year,the Department of Geography teamed
up with the Department of African American Studies and the Department of
Anthropology to hold their own commencement ceremony in the campus Chapel on May
22. This year's graduates included geography doctoral candidate, Catherine Carter, along With over a hundred graduating seniors and masters students from the combined departments.
African American Studies Department Chair Sharon Harley was the master of ceremonies
for this year’s program, a position that is rotated with the other
departments each year. She provided the welcome, introduction of the
platform party and speaker, and the closing remarks. BSOS Dean Ed Montgomery delivered a
greeting from the college and offered congratulations and encouragement to the
graduates. After the Dean’s talk, the diplomas were handed out to the students
by department, with African American Studies going first, followed by the
Anthropology and Geography Departments. Each chair made a short presentation
before personally handing the sheepskins out to the students. The name readers
were the undergraduate and graduate directors of the respective departments; for
our department these were Joseph Cirrincione and Eric Kasischke.
The Department held a reception following the ceremony for the graduates, their families and friends, and the faculty and staff. At the reception, the annual departmental awards were granted to this year's recipients. The O.E. Baker award for outstanding graduate student went to Ed Hyer and Konrad Wessels. Receiving the Anderson award for oustanding undergraduate was Jeffrey Marman. The prize for the Robert Harper award for outstanding writing went to junior geography major Jamie Worms. The new Alumni Writing Award for Regional Geography went to Denise George. Congratulations to these students and all Department of Geography Spring graduates!
