Geography Career Fair is a Success

Now its ninth year, the semi-annual Geography Career Fair took place on November 14. During the fair, companies and organizations from the Washington DC metropolitan area met and recruited students from our department for internships and permanent jobs.  Among the organizations were: ESRI, GeoEye, Inc., Army Corps of Engineers, Earth System Science Interdisciplinary Center (ESSIC-NOAA), Greenhorne and O’Mara, Earth Resources Technology, Inc., Lockheed Martin, ASPRS Imaging and Geospatial Information Society, Softech Solutions, US Census Bureau,  Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU), Fugro Earthdata, and S.S. Papadopulos and Associates, Inc. The diversity of the organizations in attendance illustrates the need for geographers in a variety of workplaces such as governmental agencies, nonprofit agencies, and the private sector, among others.   Additionally, many of the company representatives are alumni of the Department of Geography and came back to recruit students. These included Brian Lee (Greenhorne and O’Mara), Michael Raftcliffe (US Census Bureau), Matthew Fowler (Lockheed Martin), Rachel Claxton (Softech Solutions), John Mills (ESRI), and Timothy Clark (Army Corps).  Also in attendance were representatives from the Masters of Professional Studies in Geospatial Information Sciences (MPS-GIS) and the department’s Geography club.   The fair brought students from different majors across campus, such as Computer Science, Environmental Science & Policy, and Business, and even attracted students from neighboring universities such as George Washington University and the University of Maryland at Baltimore County.
