In its second year, the Master of Professional Studies in Geographic Information Sciences (MPS-GIS) has grown to over 60 students! The MPS-GIS program is structured especially for professionals pursuing careers in GIS-related fields in public, private, and non-profit organizations. The program offers students the opportunity to take graduate courses in the key areas of GIS that are most relevant to the contemporary workplace, including the advanced use of geographic information systems, and remote sensing, spatial analysis methods, GIS modeling, and specialized computer programming. Led by Dr. Catherine Carter, the MPS-GIS program has already garnered acclaim from many within and outside of the department. Dr. Carter worked tirelessly to launch this program and now that work is paying off. The following are some remarks from the students in the program. “It provides the perfect combination of academic, but pragmatic challenges that the working professional faces.” Vitad Pradith “The skills that have been administered from the program have empowered me with the capacity to solve a number of real world problem using GIS technology and methods learned.” Ted Smith “I am confident that what is ahead for me will open up many more aspects of how to use [all of the applications] to benefit both the workplace and my customers.” Paul Hlavinka "A MPS in GIS from Maryland will enable me to achieve greater levels of responsibility with the US Intelligence Community." Stephen Morgan
