Q: When downloading .gz files using Netscape the file gets dumped
to my screen in ASCII format

A: This is due to a misconfiguration in Netscape's download option. Modifying the Netscape "preferences" enables one to download files to disk without having them opened in the browser window.

Directions:
Open Netscape browser and click 'Edit' and 'Preferences'
Click 'Navigator' and 'Applications' [Opens an Applications dialog box]
Click 'New' to make a new rule [Opens another dialog box]
Enter the following:
        Description: 'gZip Compressed Data'
        MIME Type: 'application/x-zip-compressed'
        Suffixes: gz
        UnSelect 'Use this MIME as the outgoing default for these extensions'
        Select 'Save To Disk' option and Click 'OK'.
        Close and re-open Netscape
