Q: I'm worried about others accessing my files. How can I protect them?
A: The following is from Glue On-line Help: Keeping Your Files Safe.
Glue machines are not completely private and secure. There are, however, steps you can take to make access to your files very difficult. All users, from the beginner to the most advanced, should take these simple precautions:
- Do not store personal or sensitive information (i.e., any information that must be kept secret) on your account.
- Never lend your account to another person (e.g., by telling anyone your password, or leaving someone logged into your account).
- Keep your password secret.
- Currently the default file permission is set so that you have full access to your files (reading, writing/editting, executing) while other users can only read and execute your files and directories. In order to change this default please see the section entitled About File Permissions which is under the Managing Your Glue Account.
- Keep backup copies of critical files (like your thesis) on removable media such as floppy diskettes (see Backing Up and Restoring Files).
- Do not leave your workstation unattended while you are logged in. If you are going further than to pick up printer output, either logout, or use a protective program such as xlock.
