Q: How do I read PDF files with Netscape?

A (I): If your account is not already set up to read PDF (Portable Document Format) files, there are a couple of alternatives you can use. The easiest way to deal with PDF files is to just download them into your homespace and use Acrobat reader. Just type "acroread" at the prompt to launch it locally and open the PDF file you've saved to your workspace. If you use this method, however, it is important that you remember to remove the PDF files from your homespace when you are finished with them to avoid problems with your quota.

A (II): There is also a way to format your Netscape preferences so that you can read it within Netscape, without downloading a lot of PDF files. In Netscape, go to the Edit drop-down menu and choose Preferences... A window will appear with a list of categories on the left side. Click the arrow next to the category choice Navigator. This will give you a list of subcategories: Languages, Applications, and Smart Browsing. Choose Applications. This will give you a list of file types on the right. Scroll down to find Portable Document Format. Highlight this entry and click Edit... In the new window that pops up, check the diamond next to Application. Enter this in the window:

/afs/glue.umd.edu/software/acrobat/current/bin/acroread %s
Click the OK button on all the windows until you get back to the main Netscape browser window. Now when you follow a link to a PDF, Acrobat Reader will launch automatically.
