Q: Why can't I print in the openlab?

A: There are a number of reasons that will result in the inability to print in the openlab:

  1. Password Problems
    • Wrong Account - Make sure that you are not entering the password from another account. Since all accounts are now linked in the University, you need to enter your Directory ID and password.

    • Keyboard Problems
      • You may have entered or changed the password with the numlock key off, or used a strange character like spacebar in your password.
      • Is the "caps-lock" key pressed?
      • The keyboard may have a sticky or broken key. This may not be obvious at first because the password you type does not appear on the screen.

    • If none of these suggestions work, bring your student ID and registration to the OIT Help Desk and describe the problem.

  2. Insufficient Funds
    • Insuffient Funds - You may have too small a value on your terrapin express account to print. You can add value to an account at http://dining.umd.edu/terrapin. The minimum amount for transfers is $1.00. If the Terrapin Express Account balance is below $1.00, more money must be deposited into the Terrapin Express in order to transfer $1.00 into the Print Account.

    • Funds Held - When a job is sent to the printer, funds up to the maximum page setting are held while the job is waiting. If the job is not successful, the funds return to the account after 2 hours. Funds held in escrow, will reduce the funds available for immediate use. To avoid "Insufficient Funds" errors, set the maximum page setting to the number of pages in your document each time you print.

    • Maximum Pages Parameter - The maximum page parameter sets the number of pages that the program expects to print for the job sent. The default value is 25 pages. If an account has less than 250 cents, the pages will not be sent because the program is checking for an ability to print 25 pages. Thus, the maximum page setting needs to be changed. The maximum page setting is changed in the same window that you select a file and print from.

  3. Default Printer
    • Be sure that you select the appropriate printer for where you would like your document to be printed - either "geogbw1" or "geoglab". In the print settings window that appears before you send your document to be printed, select the printer name in the dropdown box at the top of the window. The file will be sent to this printer. The default printer is often a digital printer, so if you forget to change the printer name, nothing will be printed.
