Education

PhD  Physical Geography, Indiana State University, 1979
MA   Geography, Boston University, 1974
BA    Geography, Boston University, 1967

Research Interests

  • Land Remote Sensing
  • Geographic Data Systems & Handling
  • Bioclimatology
  • Global Change

Dr. Goward, professor in Geography, also hold a joint appointment  with the Institute for Advanced Computer Studies, University of Maryland College Park.  He pursues biophysical applications of land remotely sensed data.  The goal of this research is to improve our understanding of state and dynamics of land conditions, as influenced by natural variability and human activities. Dr. Goward also explores advanced geographic data systems to facilitate access to and exploitation of large volume remote sensing data sets. He recently served as the Team Leader for the NASA Landsat Science Team (1997-2001) and continues to work with the Landsat Project Science Office at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center on mission operation. He is also the science co-chair of the advisory committee for the USGS National Land Satellite Remote Sensing Data Archive (NSLRSDA) at the EROS Data Center. He has published extensively in professional journals and books and serves a variety of advisory panels including an associate editor for Remote Sensing of Environment.

Research Projects
  • Validation of the Landsat-7 long-term acquisition plan
  • Assessing eastern North America forest disturbance and regrowth: Potential for passive optical remote sensing
