Research Project
Previous studies have indicated that outward urban development has consumed large amount of resource land in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan region and this land consumption process may have offset the over result of restoration effort in the Chesapeake Bay since 1983. Researchers have also found that large urban settlement like Washington, D.C., especially at its urban-rural fringe, will be major “battleground” for continuing outward urban development. Given that the pressure of development at this urban-rural fringe has shown no sign of slow down and population is projected to continue to grow, this on-going research analyzes that how local land use decision influences land cover change using impervious surfaces as urbanization indicator.
