Satellite Images of the 1999
Mid-Atlantic Drought

The Mid-Atlantic in late July 1995 and 1999. The images show the amount of green vegetation in a normal year (1995) and the drought year (1999). The colors indicate the value of the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), a measure of the ability of the vegetation to capture sunlight. Red and yellow indicate small amounts of healthy vegetation and magenta and purple high vegetation cover.

The NDVI was calculated from data returned by a NOAA Earth-orbiting meteorological satellite that carries an instrument known as the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR). The NDVI is a measure of the condition of the vegetation in the region.
