The Flood
The floods that followed the intense rainfall from Hurricane Floyd caused tremendous damage throughout the region, although not to the extent suffered to the south in the Carolinas. When coupled with sea level rise, additional hurricanes of this magnitude threaten coastal communities. The overland flow of water across previously parched fields and highly impervious surfaces (parking lots, roads, roofs) carried a tremendous amount of detritus, nutrients, chemical pollutants and sediment into rivers, bays and, ultimately, the ocean. These materials are clearly visible in the following NOAA-AVHRR image acquired 2 days after the hurricane.
